Elizabeth has been seperated from the man she love for 5 years and doesn't know where he is or if he's alive until one night she see's him in at the bar in town that she works at.
Rewind by 5 years:
Lizzie, her boyfriend, and their best friend were all happy and carefree. But then Lizzie's boyfriend decides that he wants to marry Lizzie. He tells their best friend and he is happy for him and Lizzie. So he goes to her father and asks for permission to marry Lizzie. Only he tells him that if he goes through with it he will have him killed and to therefore get lost and never see his daughter. And that if he ever does try to see her He will have them both killed. So he goes home and starts to pack unwillingly. Before leaving the next day he tells their best friend what happened and swear to never tell Lizzie. He sails away in his boat.
